Top story: The UN's top court has ordered Israel to do everything in its power to prevent genocide in Gaza. The International Court of Justice in the Hague made the ruling in a case brought by South Africa. It said Israel must do more to protect civilians, but stopped short of calling for a cease-fire. The court also ordered the release of Israeli hostages. I speak to Aaron David Miller, Senior fellow at Carnegie Endowment for International Peace and former US State Department adviser. He says the ICJ ruling is a rebuke to Israel albeit without much impact on ground and accuses South Africa of hypocrisy for supporting Russian president Putin's attempted genocide of Ukraine. -
Gaza latest: Israel steps up strikes, hospitals 'suspend' operations | DW News
Raheela Mahomed presents DW News.
Operations at the biggest hospital in Gaza have been suspended because the facility has run out of fuel, according to the Hamas-run health authority. Hamas officials say Israeli air strikes hit Al-Shifa hospital. Despite international calls to stop the bombardment, Israel is stepping up its actions in Gaza. Israeli troops are pushing deeper into urban areas in northern Gaza, as more airstrikes pound the region. Israel has also hit sites in southern Lebanon in the worst escalation along the border in nearly two decades. Its main target is the Hezbollah armed group, an ally of Hamas. Arab leaders are gathering in Saudi Arabia for an emergency summit on Gaza. Palestinian Authority Mahmoud Abbas has arrived in Riyadh for the talks. As the war reaches its fifth week, Arab nations are expected to issue a joint call for an end to Israel's bombardment of Gaza. The leaders of Syria and Iran are among those also attending. Activists in the UK have blockaded a British military equipment manufacturer, calling for a ceasefire in Gaza and an end to arms sales to Israel. The BAE Systems factory doesn't directly export equipment to Israel, but supplies parts for US-made fighter jets flown by the Israeli military. -

Al Jazeera - Saudi Arabia: Global pressure calling for end to arms sales
Rights groups are ramping up pressure against Saudi Arabia’s leadership calling on the international community to close its doors on arms sales after the killing of Jamal Khashoggi and over the war in Yemen.
A bipartisan group of U.S. lawmakers have introduced a bill to ban arms sales to Saudi Arabia. It would cut military co-operation, unless American investigators can provide proof the Saudi government did not order the killing of Khashoggi. Germany’s Chancellor Angela Merkel has joined other European countries in calling for a 'credible' investigation and has halted a weapons deals with Saudi Arabia. The Campaign Against Arms Trade is challenging the British government's decision to continue to licence the export of military equipment to Saudi Arabia. “Right now, UK made jets are flying over Yemen, they’re dropping UK made bombs firing UK made missiles and the results have created one of the worst humanitarian crisis in the world today,” says Andrew Smith from the CAAT. Yemen has been torn apart by conflict since 2015, when the Saudi led coalition launched an air campaign against the Houthi rebels. The United Nations is warning of widespread famine with half the population relying on humanitarian aid and millions displaced.
